Not many people know about the Philippines and the Filipinos love for food. It is in our culture, our nature and in our system to constantly eat when we're around people. Filipino food is not the first thing people think about when they come to the Philippines. Tourists often find our beaches, history and natural wonders more fascinating than our local cuisine. Allow me to take you through a journey through food in the Philippines.
Whenever I have friends from other countries visit me in Manila, I always make them try "balot" or fertilized duck egg. According to CNN, it is a "Filipino delicacy that makes the world squirm". It may not sound appealing or delicious, but it is definitely a must-try. The beauty of balot is that you can enjoy eating it from start to finish. Not only that but it is something that you cannot find anywhere else in the world.
Balot is best enjoyed when eaten around family and friends who are eating it around you. I personally enjoy eating it during election season as a snack, as it becomes a bonding experience with my cousins and I.
How To Eat Balot:
1. Soft boil the egg as to not cook the inside.
2. Crack the top open and sip the soup inside. Trust me, it's the best part.
3. Peel the egg and eat the rest of the parts. You may find some crunchy bits and pieces as there is an 18 year old duck being formed inside.
I promise it's worth it.
